Travel Belgium About Brussels Upper Town Musees Royaux Des Beaux Arts Musee DArt Moderne

To reach the Musée d'Art Moderne you'll need to use the underground passageway, which leads from the main entrance of the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts to Level -2 of the yellow area, whose nineteenth-century, mostly Belgian paintings are spread over five small floors - two underground and three above. Another stairway on Level -2 leads down to the six subterranean half-floors that constitute the green area of twentieth-century works. The green area is comparatively small and has an international flavour, with the work of Belgian artists - including René Magritte and Paul Delvaux - supplemented by the likes of Dalí, Picasso, Chagall, Henry Moore, Miró, Matisse and Francis Bacon.

Surrealism - Delvaux and Magritte

Level -5/6 is given over to the Surrealists. There's a fine Dalí, The Temptation of St Anthony , a hallucinatory work in which spindly-legged elephants tempt the saint with fleshy women, and a couple of haunting de Chirico paintings of...

Contemporary art

Down on Level -7/8 , there's some pretty incomprehensible modern stuff, featuring an international range of artists with the displays - and installations - regularly rotated. All the same, you're likely to spot the swirling abstracts of...
