Eating and Drinking in Boulogne

As you might expect from a large fishing port, Boulogne is a good spot to eat fresh fish and seafood. There are dozens of possibilities for eating around place Dalton and the ville haute , but bear in mind the day-tripper trade and be selective. If you're after a drink , there is a concentration of bars in place Godefroy de Bouillon, opposite the Hôtel de Ville, and several lively bars in place Dalton, with Au Bureau and the Welsh Pub being most popular.

Bar Hamiot , 1 rue Faidherbe. This brasserie remains as popular as ever with locals and tourists alike, offering a large range of dishes from €5.79 omelettes and €8.38-13.72 fish dishes to €12.50 and €16.77 menus.

Christope et Laurence , 10 rue Coquelin (tel 03.21.31.45.64). Friendly service in a small, popular restaurant. Good home-cooking on menus from €11.43 to €21.34.

Radisson Hotels & Resorts

Estaminet du Château , 2 rue du Château, off rue de Lille by the basilique (tel 03.21.91.49.66). Serving simple food in a prettily decorated old stone building opposite Notre-Dame in the ville haute , this restaurant has an excellent menu from €9.15 and inexpensive à la carte dishes (quarter roast chicken €4.57). Closed Thurs.

L'Étoile de Marrakech , 228 rue Nationale. A friendly Moroccan restaurant where the chef comes out to shake your hand; olives, bread and spicy sausage come as complimentary starters, and the servings of couscous (from €10.52) are incredibly generous. Closed Wed.

La Matelote , 80 bd Ste-Beuve (tel 03.21.30.17.97). Very smart restaurant, located opposite Nausicaá, featuring a dégustation menu at €59.46. If you'd rather not spend that much, you could go for the €28.97 menu or à la carte fish from €18.29. Loving care is taken over the food and service, but it's rather snooty. Closed Sun evening.

Aux Pêcheurs d'Etaples , 31 Grande Rue. The freshest fish and seafood in a smart restaurant hidden behind the poissonnerie front. Menus at €12.20 upwards.

Sucré Salé , 13 rue Monsigny. Smart, modern eatery combining the roles of restaurant, café, bar, salon de thé and pâtisserie; its speciality is gourmet salads, making it a good choice for vegetarians. Light, airy and sparse, with a wonderful range of teas and coffees. Mon-Sat 8am-8pm, Sun takeaway only.
