Exploring Around Calais About Blockhaus at Eperlecques

In the Forêt d'Eperlecques , 12km north of St-Omer (several trains daily from Calais to Watten station, on the eastern edge of the forest, about 4km from the site), you can visit the largest ever Blockhaus , or concrete bunker, built in 1943-44 by the Germans - or rather 6000 half-starved slave labourers (March Sun 2.15-6pm; April, Oct & Nov daily 2.15-6pm; May Mon-Sat 10am-noon & 2.15-6pm, Sun 10am-7pm; June & Sept Mon-Sat 10am-noon & 2.15-7pm, Sun 10am-7pm; July & Aug daily 10am-7pm; tel 03.21.88.44.22; €5.95). It was designed to launch V2 rockets against London, but fortunately the RAF and French Resistance prevented its ever being ready for use by bombing it during construction.
