Exploring Around Calais About Blockhaus at Eperlecques
In the Forêt d'Eperlecques , 12km north of
St-Omer (several trains daily from Calais to Watten station, on the
eastern edge of the forest, about 4km from the site), you can visit the
largest ever Blockhaus , or concrete bunker, built in 1943-44
by the Germans - or rather 6000 half-starved slave labourers (March Sun
2.15-6pm; April, Oct & Nov daily 2.15-6pm; May Mon-Sat 10am-noon
& 2.15-6pm, Sun 10am-7pm; June & Sept Mon-Sat 10am-noon &

03.21.88.44.22; €5.95). It was designed to launch V2 rockets against
London, but fortunately the RAF and French Resistance prevented its
ever being ready for use by bombing it during construction.
