The gares routière and SNCF are adjacent to each other, just a few minutes' walk away from the centre of town: cross the wide River Oise and go up rue Solférino to place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville. The tourist office (Mon-Sat 9.15am-12.15pm & 1.45-6.15pm; Easter-Oct also open Sun 10am-1pm & 2.30-5pm; tel 03.44.40.01.00, fax 03.44.40.23.28) takes up part of the ornate Hôtel de Ville and, for a small fee, will provide you with a plan of the town, on which is conveniently marked an exhaustive visitors' route, including the forest paths.

As for accommodation , there are cheapish rooms at the Hôtel St-Antoine , 17 rue de Paris (tel 03.44.23.22.27; under €24), concealed above a Thai restaurant; and the Lion d'Or , 4 rue du Général-Leclerc (tel 03.44.23.32.17; under €24). More comfortable is the Hôtel de Flandre , an enormous, recently redecorated place on the riverside at 16 quai de la République (tel 03.44.83.24.40, fax 03.44.90.02.75; €24-34). Much the best place to stay, however, is the Hôtel de France , 17 rue E.-Floquet, centrally located right next to the Hôtel de Ville (tel 03.44.40.02.74, fax 03.44.40.48.37; €24-34; good restaurant from €22.56), a charming old place with very reasonable rates. The town campsite is along avenue Royale, into the forest beyond the palace.
