The train station (tel 04.95.60.00.50) is on route du Port, 500m south of where the ferries arrive. The Bastia-Calvi bus stops just south of place Paoli in the town's main thoroughfare, avenue Piccioni. The SNCM office is on avenue J.-Calizi (tel 04.95.60.09.56), and the tourist office on the south side of place Paoli (May, June, Sept & Oct Mon-Fri 9.30am-noon & 3-6pm; July & Aug daily 9am-1pm & 2.30-7.30pm; tel 04.95.60.04.35).

L'Île Rousse fills up early in the year and it can be difficult to find a hotel at any time from May to October. Most places are modern buildings, more functional than personable. The town has two main campsites : Les Oliviers , 1km east (tel 04.95.60.19.92), and Le Bodri (tel 04.95.16.19.70), 3km west off the main Calvi road (you can get to the latter site direct by rail - ask for "l'arrêt Bodri").   

HOTELS

Le Grillon , 10 av Paul-Doumer (tel 04.95.60.00.49, fax 04.95.60.43.69). The best budget hotel in town, just 1km from the centre on the St-Florent/Bastia road. Nothing special, but quiet and immaculately clean. Half-board in August, but at other times rates fall to €38 per double. Closed Nov-March. €46-61.

Napoléon Bonaparte , 3 place Paoli (tel 04.95.60.06.09). Garish, converted palazzu which for years was the only luxury hotel on the island; although downgraded, it still has a certain old-fashioned appeal. Closed Nov-March. €76-91.

Splendid , 4 rue Comte-Valéry (tel 04.95.60.00.24, fax 04.95.60.04.57). Well-maintained, 1930s-style building with small swimming pool and some sea views from upper floors; very reasonable tariffs given the location. Closed Nov-March. €61-76.Santa Maria , in the port (tel 04.95.60.13.49, fax 04.95.60.32.48). One of the larger and best-value three-star places, situated next to the ferry port. Rooms have air-conditioning and overlook a small garden and pool. Open all year. €61-76.
