Several of the hotels have good restaurants , while the
Family Home serves
a filling and good-value dinner at 8pm each evening for €9.91.
Otherwise, most of Bayeux's restaurants are in the rue St-Jean, leading
east from the river, or near the main door of the cathedral. Watch out
for Sundays: virtually everywhere is shut.
La Fringale
, 43 rue St-Jean (tel 02.31.21.34,40). The nicest of the many pavement
restaurants along the pedestrian rue St-Jean, offering good-value lunch
menus and also generous salads and snacks, as well as more formal fishy
dinners. Closed mid-Dec to Jan, plus Wed in low season.
Le Petit Bistrot
, 2 rue Bienvenue (tel 02.31.51.85.40). Bright-yellow-painted
restaurant opposite the cathedral; menus from €14.94 upwards boast a
fine assortment of scallops. Closed Sun, plus Mon in low season.
Le Petit Normand
, 35 rue Larcher (tel 02.31.22.88.66). Sixteenth-century house by the
cathedral, offering good traditional cooking, with seafood specialities
and local cider. Lunch menus from €9.15, dinner from €14.48. Closed
Jan, plus Thurs Oct-April.
Le Pommier
, 40 rue des Cuisiniers (tel 02.31.21.52.10). Small traditional
restaurant near the cathedral, with a tiny terrace. Meat- and
dairy-rich Norman cuisine on menus from €11.59 to €22.26. Closed Feb,
plus Sun evening & Wed in low season.
La Table du Terroir
, 42 rue St-Jean (tel 02.31.92.05.53). A rendezvous for closet meat
freaks, tucked away behind a butcher's shop and serving the freshest,
bloodiest flesh on a well-judged quartet of menus, at €9.15, €14.94,
€17.53 and €23.63 - the last features a tureen of sweetbreads. Closed
Sun evening, Mon & mid-Oct to mid-Nov.
